El Matador

Slow motion. Foot stamping into dust. Gentle flamenco. Red fabric thorn from man’s shoulders in strong hands, bending with the wind so lively, yet firm. Impatient hoofs stir up small clouds of sand. The music hastens, gets louder, the torero stands still, the bull gains speed, the line between life and death gets thinner, the tramp gets louder, and BOOM! – music stops, darkness covers everything, there’s only a heartbeat. Single reflection on a perfectly polished espada breaks the suspension – the beast attacks! Red fabric, cold steel, a single drop of blood running down the blade, last breath… and darkness. Cheering crowd, some text.

Soft-body for fabric, particles for dust, some pre-rendered crowd. Bump maps for fur and normal maps for subtle pattern of the handmade clothes: ornamented jacket, pants and hat. Field of depth to change the lens from bullfighter’s back to the bull. Fluid simulation for blood – floating in slow motion through the air, running down the blade, dripping from the tip. Background music, sounds of fabric, cheering crowd, the heartbeat, trampling hoofs. A lot of work.

Long time no see, huh? One of those few readers I have (seriously guys, why do you subscribe? nothing ever happens here) actually asked for this post after she heard what me was thinking. So let me fulfil her wish…

Smith & Wesson Bodyguard model 49

There’s this guy in a black-white striped suit and shiny shoes, called Tony. And there’s his bodyguard, a big fella with cool shades, wide arms and tiny headset, called Mun. Mun, the Goon. Tony’s a big fish, he meets people, bargains, parties, has ladies. The last one’s a bit of a problem because Tony’s last girlfriend, Gena, is his gunman’s ex-wife. This whole situation seems to upset the Goon in a particular manner. He sees them touching – he pukes…

Just a rough idea but I can see a good storyline hiding behind it and a big final scene where Mun bends in torsion avoiding bullet which hits Tony instead. Just thinking about Tony’s brain spread all over Gena’s face makes me smile (*grin*)! I wish I had more time to play with all new Blender’s features. Or at least to dig up my tablet. Hopefully it didn’t rust yet.

From time to time I’m haunted by this idea of making a storyboard for a short animation. I made several short videos in the past but never preceded by storyboards – instead I worked blind and, being honest, what I’ve finished with never was what it was supposed to be. I tormented myself with those questions – “is this part done?”, “does this look the way it should?”, “is this what I actually wanted?” – without a script you just don’t know. As a result I’ve never made anything I could call “a movie” and not catch on fire of shame. And there are so many concepts in my head! Like…

…a new life coming into being, a division of a cells which grow strong in numbers and then form a human body…

…or a story of a virus that drives healthy cells to sickness, replicates and spreads its major destructive potential…

…another one showing how a piece of an open source code migrating from hands to hands, from class to class gains tools that allow collaboration, multiplies it’s functionality, inherits and morphs until one day… it’s being taken from the world of freedom and sold on a commercial market. Because that’s how life rolls nowadays.

“One day I’ll buy a knife and cut everyone around.” Or I’ll do other stuff, not decided yet. But one day, for sure.
